Wolzstyn is home to one of most unique experiences in the world. The last steam-hauled commuter trains in regular scheduled service are in this small, picturesque city in Western Poland. Be a student engineer for a week, driving and firing of these trains while they are in actual revenue service. If you like steam locomotives, don't miss this experience because no one knows how many more years these locomotives will run.
Wolsztyn is the center of a "museum" railroad operated as part of the PKP, the national railroad system of Poland. Wolsztyn is one of several towns in the area where a roundhouse and maintenance facilities are maintained for steam locomotives. As a student engineer, you will have an official pass to be in the cab of steam locomotives operated by the PKP and selected regional railroads.
Wolsztyn Experience is chartered as a Polish non-profit company operated by British rail preservationists. Wolsztyn Experience organizes the steam-locomotive driving courses and pays the railway systems involved a portion of the fees collected from student-drivers as a means of subsidizing the cost of maintaining the fleet. Wolsztyn Experience also owns and maintains one or more of the locomotives used for courses. However, the weekly courses are operated in conjunction with regular PKP and other regional passenger and freight services. The six to ten weekly participants experience on-the-job training under Polish master engineers/drivers and firemen in a scheduled railroad environment.
Again, this course is not operating on preserved or tourist railways. It operates on scheduled mainline and branch rail services. As a participant, you will spend the majority of your time in the locomotive acting as trainee engineer and fireman, under the careful guidance of an experienced Polish train crew.
