South Georgia by Sailing Yacht
From 28 - 29 days - Nov-Dec - From US $ 16,548

This is a sailing expedition in the truest sense of the word. The island of South Georgia is one of the most remote and fascinating overseas possessions of the United Kingdom. Fewer than 2000 visitors reach this remote destination each year, despite its fame as the island to which Sir Ernest Shackleton sailed in an open boat in 1916, and is the place where he is buried. South Georgia remains relatively unexplored with many unclimbed peaks and unexplored corners. Its remoteness and harsh weather conditions will probably ensure it remains relatively unexplored for some years to come. It is not a land for the faint-hearted or ill prepared.
Yet, South Georgia Island is a destination for Southern Ocean connoisseurs. Huge numbers of seabirds and marine mammals breed along its tussac fringed shores. Save for the rusting remnants of the old whaling stations, the Island is virtually unspoilt by man and so offers unique opportunities to observe the wildlife and scenery of this most beautiful part of the Southern Ocean.
Crew members meet the Pelagic Australis in Stanley, capital of the Falkland Islands. Sailing southeast from Stanley for 750 miles, the passage to South Georgia can take as long as four to five days. After a spectacular landfall, you then spend almost two weeks exploring the north and east coasts anchoring in the many sheltered bays and natural harbors. The passage back to Stanley is mainly against the prevailing winds, so the captain will allow a minimum of seven days for the passage.
