Iceland on Horseback - Secrets of The East

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
You will be transferred from Keflavík Airport to a guesthouse in Reykjavík. In the evening, you will attend a welcome meeting that will include traditional Icelandic soup, details of your tour, and the chance to meet your fellow riders.

Day 2: Egilsstaðir - Fjallaskarð Mountain Cabin
After flying to Egilsstaðir and driving to Skriðuklaustur Farm, you will meet the horses and staff. After a short introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gait, you will ascend from a valley at nearly sea level to the great highland plateau, where the vegetation and landscape will have an artic character. Overnight will be spent at the mountain cabin Fjallaskarð, at the foot of the mountain Eyvindarfjöll. (45 km/27.9 mi)

Day 3: Fjallaskarð Mountain Cabin - Aðalból Farm
Continuing from the Fjallaskarð mountain cabin to Aðalból Farm, you will ride through the beautiful Hrafnkelsdalur Valley, the location of the famous Hrafnkels Saga. You will be able to imagine life during the adventurous Saga times as your guides tell you about historic events, making the Saga come alive. Among other sites, you will see the Faxafoss waterfall, named after one of the most famous horses in Icelandic literature. (35 km/21.7 mi)

Optional (available at an extra charge, please as us for prices): You can take a bus tour to Sænautasel, a reconstructed traditional farm. The Icelandic author and Nobel-prize winner Halldór Kiljan Laxness used this area for inspiration and as background for his famous novel Sjálfstætt fólk (Independent People). You will enjoy the diversity of the Icelandic highlands between Matbrunnavatn and Búrfellsvatn on the way. It will be a unique experience to see how Icelanders lived before the time of indoor running water and electricity. Icelandic refreshments will be offered in a reconstructed barn built of turf and rocks.

Day 4: Aðalból Farm - Sauðá Mountain Cabin
As you ride to the gigantic canyon Hafrahvammagljúfur, you can enjoy expansive views over Iceland's rugged interior as you ride across the fertile landscape of Vestur-Öræfi. You will stay overnight at Sauðá Mountain Cabin, situated north of Vatnajökull glacier in the main summer pastures for reindeer in Iceland. (45 km/27.9 mi)

Day 5: Sauðá Mountain Cabin - Snæfell Mountain Cabin
You will continue toward the magnificent Mt. Snæfell, one of the highest mountains in Iceland. In the afternoon, you will change to four-wheel drive transportation and drive toward Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull, where you can view endless stretches of ice and snow, and explore the glacier. You will stay overnight at the foot of Mt. Snæfell in a spacious mountain cabin. (25 km/15.5 mi)

Day 6: Snæfell Mountain Cabin - Laugarfell Mountain Cabin
You will see reindeer herds and countless numbers of pink-footed geese on your way around Mt. Snæfell and into the beautiful pastures of Eyjabakkar, the Eyjabakkajökull Glacier towering over you. You can relax in a natural hot pool after the ride close to the Laugarfell Mountain Cabin, your accommodation for the night. (45 km/27.9 mi)

Day 7: Laugarfell Mountain Cabin -
Útýrðingsstaðir Farm
As you descend to the Norðurdalur Valley, you can view beautiful waterfalls in the glacier-fed river Jökulsá in Fljótsdalur. The riding tour will end at Skriðuklaustur Farm, where you will say goodbye to the horses. Overnight will be spent at Útýrðingsstaðir Farm. (45 km/27.9 mi)

Day 8: Reykjavík
You will fly back to Reykjavík in the morning and stay overnight at a guesthouse in Reykjavík.

Day 9: Departure from Iceland
Transfer to Keflavík Airport will be made in time for your flight home.
